The Mayor of Freetown His Worship Herbert Williams was over the weekend in Koidu City, Kono District to support the KLIN KONO exercise
organised by the District Council Chairman John Yambasu common known in the district as Governor and the Mayor of Koidu New Shebehun City
Council (KNSCC) Sessie Ngenda. The exercise which took place on Saturday 26th September 2009 saw the youths of Koidu Town and staff of the
KNSCC cleaning the major streets. Trucks turned tons of grind stones collected from the Koidu Holdings blasting site on the streets to close potholes.
Speaking to this press, Mayor Herbert Williams said that he was in Koidu City for the quarterly meeting of the Local Council Association of Sierra Leone
(LOCALSL) of which he is the current Chairman. “I believe local councils are pivotal for national development and being a mayor of the largest municipality
in Sierra Leone and chairman of the association I should join my colleagues to build a beautiful Sierra Leone,” Mayor Williams said.
Since his appointment as Mayor of Freetown Herbert Williams have undertaking several development projects which include the erection of an
administrative block at the council’s office area on Wallace Johnson Street, the fencing of cemeteries in the city, construction of a market at Sewa Grounds
and many others. These developments couple with his willingness to support his colleagues has earned him the accolade of being one of the best mayors of
the Freetown City Council (FCC) in living memory.
Mr. John Yambasu Chairman Kono District Council expressed his delight to have the Mayor of Freetown, the Mayor of Makeni and the District Chairman
of Koinadugu in Koidu City as part of the KLIN KONO exercise. “The government is supportive of the decentralization process and we who form the
Local Councils Family are of the same opinion too,” Mr. Yambasu said.
Kono District like Kailahun was completely razed to the ground during the 11 year civil war and burnt houses are still everywhere in the district. No pipe
borne water or government paid for electricity is available and many young people are jobless. The roads leading to the district are not tarred. The Mayor
of Koidu City Sessie Ngenda said the Koidu City Council is trying to address some of the issues but also needs the intervention of government and
development partners local or international to improve on the infrastructure and living standard in the district.
