The Sierra Leone Peoples’ Party (SLPP), will this weekend hold its national convention in the provincial headquarter town of Kenema; east of the country. It will be for the election of a new executive of the party. Paul k. Joseph out gone Eastern Region President of Sierra Leone Association of Journalists said every hotel and guest house has been booked already and entertainment spots booming in the face of “global” or hard times.
Sources at the Lungi International Airport claim that SLPP heavyweights in the Diaspora have been flying in for the past two weeks with more checking in this week.
So far, former Head of State Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio, former Minister of Finance in the Kabbah administration, John Benjamin among others are expected to throw their hats in the ring to contest for the 2012 presidential election under the SLPP symbol. The journalist, Gbondima Gbondo who many consider a joker has expressed his interest to be leader of the party.
As party stalwarts are streaming in to Kenema Town a stronghold of the party, the unwavering Hon. Manah Kpaka who till his death “stayed green” or SLPP is being laid to rest today.
A staunched SLPP who preferred anonymity said Manah Kpaka was steadfast but questioned, “Why is he buried in Freetown and not in his constituency in Pujehun another Florida of the SLPP?”
Family sources said the late Manah Kpaka did little in his political career for the people of Pujehun and therefore his funeral should have been low key in Pujehun compared to the large crowd of mourners who sat in the St. Anthony Parish on Syke Street, Freetown ready to match the remains to the cemetery. The convention would take place on the 6-7 March 2009.
