Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom , His Excellency Melvin Chalobah, continued his tour of cities within the United Kingdom , when he addressed Sierra Leoneans in Manchester last Sunday.
Organised jointly by the Sierra Leone Women Association of Manchester (SLWAM) and the Sierra Leone Association of Greater Manchester (SLAGM), the programme was chaired by Dr. Alhaji Kamara, who described entourage from the High Commission as a group of responsible people representing a credible government, “who have come to Manchester to deliver a credible messageâ€.
Chalobah told the jam-packed hall of the government’s achievements since taking over the reigns of government and called on them to join hands to boost the President’s vision.
He said the purposes of his visit are to establish links and working relationship with Sierra Leoneans in Manchester , inform them about the achievements of government as well as listen to them on matters concerning their welfare and experiences, among others.
The High Commissioner said government has almost succeeded in the completion of the Bumbuna Hydro Electric Project which he said, will increase power generation for the country to between 50 and 60 megawatts.
“When the APC took over the reigns of government, power supply was only 10 megawatts, but now even without Bumbuna, it has been improved to 30 megawatts just within a period of one year,†the High Commissioner said amidst thunderous applause from the jam-packed hall.
In addition, he said government has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese Government which has offered to build two more dams for the country.
“Let us therefore hope that sooner, than later, Freetown will no longer be the ‘ Darkest City ’ in the world, but The City of Light,†Chalobah said
Chalobah said with the achievement of electricity, government is now turning attention to agriculture, which according to him, government has embarked on large scale mechanised farming which will not only ensure food security but create employment for the youths.
The High Commissioner spoke on other areas of government’s achievement including health, tourism and the diaspora initiative which he said was set up by the President to create job opportunities for Sierra Leoneans abroad.
Earlier, Gwen Mason welcomed the entourage and expressed their appreciation to the team for being there to share with them their problems and concerns.
Both Aminata Sesay and Adijatu Tejan-Kadri of the SLWAM and SLAGM respectively gave brief backgrounds about their organisations which were all aimed at forstering better relationship among Sierra Leoneans in Manchester as well as making meaningful contributions to their people back home.
Information Attaché, Sorie Sudan Sesay, introduced the High Commissioner while the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Mohamed Kamara.
Highlight of the programme was a questions and answer session which took the better part of the programme.
Manchester was the second city within the United Kingdom to be visited by the Sierra Leone High Commission in recent times as part of his Meet-Sierra Leoneans tour programme – the first was Brighton two months ago.
