He was convicted on a one count charge of misappropriation of public funds and sentenced to five years imprisonment or an alternative fine of Le. 5 million ($1666). The former Accountant Madonna Drusilla Cole was also found guilty of the same charge and sentenced to two years or an alternative fine of Le. 3 million ($1000)
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) accused the two of misappropriating Le63 million ($22,000) which the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) paid as rent for the use of SLBS facilities at Leicester peak and other sites in the country. It was alleged that the money was paid in dollars directly to Kashope Wellington and he converted it into local leones which he and the accountant misappropriated.
The presiding judge, Justice Nicholas Brown- Marke of the High Court of Sierra Leone found them guilt, and even ordered prosecution witness Alimamy Mansaray who was moved from the position of deputy secretary in the information ministry then and now Director of Human Resource to immediately refund to the SLBS the sum of Le. 30 million ($10,000) he admitted in his testimony to have received from Kashope Wellington.
The judgment has expanded Mr. Wellington’s disgrace. SLBS workers called for his sacking and he was dragged out of the position with molestation. His conviction thus proves right those who, in 2007 called for him to be rooted out of office.
