The Standard Times Newspaper, one of the country's leading papers, has published a supposed demand-letter from the Kenema branch of the opposition Sierra Leone peoples' Party, SLPP. The writers are demanding cutlasses, 'diamba' (locally grown weed for making its partakers feel elated), daggers and several items deemed logistics to help prepare for what the paper called, 'next general elections'. The next local and national elections for presidential, wards and parliamentary are not due until Sepetember of 2012.
The SLPP has already denied the letter and has issued a press statement to that effect while at the same time making an official complaint to the Independent Media Commission, IMC. Meanwhile, www.thesierraleonenews.com has obtained a copy of a cassette believed to be that of a meeting held by SLPP members somewhere in the country. It speaks of preparations by the party to help remove the ruling APC from power, understandably using democratic means. The cassette however expresses the need for the SLPP to use former kamajors (local militia) and ex-combatants to do so.
