It takes a genius of Odysseys, to enter into the President’s mind when it comes to administering the state. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and all the ancient sages, could never read the minds of the Roman rulers though they could interpret their actions.
The President, Ernest Bai Korma, before leaving for Yoni in the Tonlolili District of the north asked a paramount chief friend whether the people of Sierra Leone had forgotten about the rumor of cabinet reshuffle. The friend said ‘it would seem so sir’, not because he believed in the answer he gave, but because he knew that was what the President wanted to hear. This gives two reasons of concern and another for a question: The President would not want to be seen to be going according to the predictions of the public and neither would he want to be pushed by the masses’ interest in trying to twist his Presidential hand. But the snag is in the question; namely, why would the President want to surprise those who elected him?
Tejan Kabbah is on record to have said that it is not easy for Presidents to sack working colleague-ministers. His reasons may have been naïve, but it stands to reason that such sacks have other considerations other than lack of performance and competence in service of one’s country as public servant-minister. No Presidential action may be unfettered. Thus pretty soon, we expect the Presidential axe on ministerial necks and this is what we hear the President’s mind is likely thinking like:
Education
We hear that the Education ministry will see a major sack. Reasons are not available but political expediency more than anything might it.
Works and Maintenance
Here, a big head is waiting to roll as this is being prayed upon the first gentle man to forestall any future political earth quake. If and when it does happen, no quivers will be felt we hear.
Internal Affairs/Local government
This had long been expected but for a suitable place of resettlement for personnel therein.
It’s been two and half years since news of bad doings have been unearthed in that corner of leadership. Fed up and tormented by the ills accompanying old age, the President would have long struck, but for the intervention of the second gentleman who would seem to be in love with the old man of that ministry; and yet, services therein are lower in quality and short in supply and never inter den with the President’s dreams. These have been compounded by the chaotic paramount chieftaincy elections recently. Heads, we hear will roll here too.
Marine and Fisheries ministry
If rancor and atrocious bickering have been tormenting the President from any ministry since he came to power, then it is at the Marine and Fisheries ministry. Both great women therein are in for the axe and yet as to whether old friendship will give way to quality and diligent national service, we will have to wait and see. Both occupants have had their own share of national leadership, and since His Excellency wants to make few more marks on his political grades before 2012, he cannot afford to have excess baggage in liabilities. We hear of a total over haul of that ministry.
Transport and civil aviation
Since Kemoh Sesay left that ministry, nothing much has been heard of happening there. Not that anyone expects anything to happen, but intuitive and cognitive knowledge teach that no one gives what he has not got!
Despite involving in few mis-happenings, including forcing helicopter man Zeef Mogestein to cough $8000 without receipt, one hardly would want to peruse any factual positive records of happenings to let the occupants continue as usual. The ACC has delberately dragged feet on such investigations because of the special interest of the deputy in such issue that borer on party members.
However, the meek and gentle deputy lady is at loss as to what the boss actually does. One sack has been envisaged from that corner, looking into the President’s mind.
Presidential Affairs ministry
If there is any minister in the Ernest Bai Korma government who loves, likes and cherishes power for the sheer sake of it, it is this new occupant of this ministry. Sometimes one wonders who really the elected President of the republic is. It would be sad for the President to naively abandon some of his key functions to one the people knew not before September 2007, simply because this occupant speaks French with a guttural accent. We hear that the first gentle man intends to distance himself from such personality who has fought with almost every other person closer to the head of state.
In the civil service, including the police, more heads will roll; provided EBK continues to mean well.
See you next week if events do not over take us!
