Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Andrew Gbebay Bangali on Monday 12th October, 2009 presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya.
High Commissioner Bangali stated: “I am happy to state that since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties between our two countries in the 1960’s, our relations have been characterized by sincere friendship and unfettered support from your Governments.”
Kenya, he recalled, stood by Sierra Leone during the county’s most trying and difficult times, adding that Kenya was among the first countries that heeded the call made by the United Nations Security Council for countries to contribute troops to Sierra Leone for a Peacekeeping Mission.
“Kenya contributed peacekeepers to the former United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and provided troops to the Civil Police Unit (CIVPOL) of the United Nations Mission to help retrain the personnel of the Sierra Leone Police Force after the war,’ he said.
He high lighted how Kenya Airways has also helped to alleviate travelling constraints in Sierra Leone after the airways made its inaugural flight to Freetown on 4th April 2006 thus signaling a ray of hope and a bright future for Sierra Leone’s aviation industry.
High Commissioner Bangali pointed out that the problem many Sierra Leoneans encountered during the past with regards travelling to East, Southern and North Africa from Sierra Leone was now a thing of the past, thanks to Kenya Air Ways.
He made mention of the recent Presidential Task Force Commission of Inquiry on Education set up by His Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, which paid a two-day working visit to Kenya as part of their fact finding mission overseas.
High Commissioner Bangali is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The High Commissioner was accompanied by the First Secretary at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Ethiopia, Mr. Mohamed Hashim, Sierra Leone’s Consul General in Kenya, Mr. Fuad Sasso and his deputy, Mr. Abdul Kargbo.
Meanwhile, on 9th and 14th October High Commissioner Bangali presented his Letters of Introduction to the Under-Secretary-Generals and Executive Directors of United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), His Excellency, Mr. Achim Steimer and Her Excellency, Mrs. Anna K. Tibaijuka respectively.
On 13th October the High Commissioner addressed a cross section of the Sierra Leonean community in Kenya.
He dilated on the current development schemes undertaken by President Koroma so far and spoke of the future projects, which the President is planning to embark on with the sole aim of transforming the country.
