Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has circulated letters and copies of brochure on investment opportunities in Sierra Leone entitled: “Investment In Sierra Leone’’.
In his letter to Embassies, Organizations, high profile International businessmen, the Ambassador informed that the hosting of high level Trade and Investment Conference on Sierra Leone due to take place in London on 18th and 19th November this year, is to reinforce Government’s commitment to Private Sector led Economic Growth for Sierra Leone.
The Conference being hosted by the Governments of Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom and supported by donor and corporate partners from around the world, the Ambassador added, “Will seek to assemble large scale potential Investors who may be interested in investment opportunities in Sierra Leone, target them with key investment projects as well as make visible the attractiveness of the Sierra Leone Market to the outside world.’’
On key sectors that will have primary focus during the conference, Ambassador Wusu Munu outlined opportunities for investors like Telecommunications, Agric business, Fishing, Tourism, Energy, Mining, Infrastructure to name but a few.
It could be recalled that President Ernest Bai Koroma and Former British Prime Minister and Founder of the Africa Governance Initiative, Mr. Tony Blair finalized plans for the Conference in New York on the 22nd September, 2009.
In his announcement on the conference, President Koroma said: “I was very pleased to announce this Investment Conference that I will be attending with my good friend, Tony Blair. Last year, the country was named the “easiest place to open a new business” in West Africa by the World Bank. From minerals to fishing, from agriculture to energy, the opportunities for investors are enormous and tangible.”
On his part, Tony Blair described President Koroma as “a remarkable leader”. “I share his belief that Governance and Growth are the most pressing challenges for his country and indeed the continent. I am backing Sierra Leone, and I think the Sierra Leone Conference in London this November will mark a big opportunity for investors and donors alike.”
The former British Prime Minister added that: “I’ve seen for myself the change that being brought about on the ground by his pro-business reforming agenda- from the development of essential policies around investment incentives and public- private partnerships; and real investment opportunities such as multi-million pound investment in palm oil, opportunity to privatize the port, and new hotel developments on Sierra Leone’s world class beaches.
According to a recent joint release signed by the State House Presidential Press Secretary and the office of Tony Blair’s Africa Governance Initiative, the first day of the conference will feature a Trade and Investment Forum aimed at private investors. The second day will bring together existing and potential donor partners for the latest Sierra Leone Consultative Group meeting, to be chaired by President Koroma, the UK Minister for International Development and the World Bank Vice President for Africa.
